The Belihuloya area has several significant historical locations that provide an insight into the culture and lives of the local populace in the past. The attractions can be classified into two categories: Religious sites and others.

The Religious sites include several “Dewalayas” (Shrines for one or more deities) and Buddhist temples (also known as “Viharayas”).

The ancient Bolthumba Dewalaya is dedicated to the mythical king Ravana (c. 5000 years ago).

Uggal Aluthnuwara Dewalaya has a history of over 700 years, and venerates the deity Kataragama.

Haldummulla Ancient Viharaya exhibits Kandyan era architecture, and is over 200 years old.

Soragune Kataragama Dewalaya is believed to be from the time of king Walagamba (1st century BC).

Bogoda Raja Maha Vihara Rock Temple dates back to the pre-Christian era.

The Sankapala Temple has three rock caves containing stone inscriptions dating back to the 2nd century BC.

Buduruwagala is a group of seven colossal rock-cut Mahayana Buddhist figures, and dates back more than 1,200 years.

Among the other sites are:

Haldumulla Ancient Fort, a Portuguese era fort, built as a strategic view point. Offers great views even today.

Adisham Bungalow, a 19th Century remnant of the British Colonial Era, now used as a Benedictine Monastery

Bogoda Bridge is an attractive 16th century roofed bridge made entirely out of wood.

Halaba Iron Bridge is a 700ft (215m) iron bridge built in 1867 by mistake, where it should have been made in Chilaw (Halawatha in Sinhala), due to a confusion of place names.

Nine Arch Railway Bridge is a viaduct with 9 arches along the railway line to Badulla.

The Demodara Railway Loop is where the railway line to Badulla loops underneath the station itself
