Top 10 places to visit during your stay at Belihuloya

Belihuloya is one of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems and is adorned with several unique and unforgettable nearby attractions, making it a hotspot for those who take a keen interest in nature, history, and adventure.

One of the primary nearby attractions when visiting this charming little town is the Bambarakanda Waterfall, the tallest one in Sri Lanka with a height of 263m. Many tourists flock to see this breathtaking sight while it also poses a healthy challenge for rock climbing and rappelling enthusiasts. Surathali Ella is also located close by and is a popular waterfall which is visited by many. It is 60m high and was named after a film that was shot there. The Ravan Water Falls is another lesser waterfall that is popular with visitors.

The Samanalawewa Reservoir is another famous attraction along with the Belihuloya Adventure Activity Centre. “Samanala” means butterfly and the reservoir is named as such due to the astonishing number of butterflies that can be seen there.

The Horton Plains National Park is also situated in the vicinity. Covered by montane grasslands and cloud forests, it is a protected area which is rich in biodiversity. The Udawalawe National Park is also situated close by and is famous for being home to some of Sri Lanka’s most magnificent flora and fauna. It is the third most visited national park in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Adisham Bungalow is a very unique attraction about 4km away for Haputale. This bungalow houses the Adisham Monastery which is run by Benedictine monks and is a place of tranquillity and peace.

The Demodara station is also a popular attraction as it is best known for its 900-metre spiral rail line known as the Demodara Loop. The rail line passes under itself, going around itself and emerging from a tunnel which runs under the railway station itself. The line also includes the incredible Nine Arches Bridge.

The Ella Rock and Mini Adams Peak will also take your breath away with their stunning views while the Dowa Rock Temple, famous for its unfinished Buddha image carved into the side of a rock wall, is another great attraction for devotees and history buffs alike.
